Cape Verde is the 2nd largest nesting population of loggerhead turtles (Caretta-Caretta) in the Atlantic Ocean, with Boa Vista the most important island for the reproduction of this endangered species.
From a logistics point of view the beaches of Boa Esperança on the north, and Ervatão and Ponta Cosme on the south-east, are the places of choice for turtle watching activities due to it being a favourite of the turtles to lay their eggs. An international field station for the scientific research and conservation of Caretta Caretta is situated on Ervatão.
- Duration: 4 hour(s)
- Location: Boavista Island
* 20h00 - Departure from your hotel or residence
* 21h00 - Arrival at Ervatão. Reception at the international field station for the scientific research and conservation of Caretta Caretta.
Each guide takes care of a group of a maximum of 15 people. This includes a briefing about the rules that must be followed to avoid disturbing the animals. After that, they will take the group to a tent at Ponta Benguinho. There you will learn more about the biology of turtles and the work they're doing for the conservation of this species.
The guide will then bring the group to the place where the turtle will be, explaining how it lays the eggs. At the end, when the turtle is returning to the sea, he shows the techniques that the workers team use to mark the animals so they can learn more about this endangered species.
You will return to your hotel or residence by about 1am.
