Originally fleeing Portuguese colonial authorities, the Rabelados did what they had to in order to maintain their identity. Setting up home in a famously difficult part of the island to access, they have continued to live relatively untouched. Despite the human challenges of living in such in environment in relative poverty, they maintain a strength of spirit which engages all who meet them.
During this half day experience, you will see a very different and interesting way of living. Be sure to check out some of the local handicrafts and artworks that are made available for travellers to buy. It is also possible to book a traditional dance show from the community for a small extra charge. Please consider these to help ensure the preservation of traditional dance, and ensure more sustainable income for the community through positive means.
