Cidade Velha is regarded as the cradle of the nation and a legacy of Cape Verdean culture. Founded in 1462, it became a hub in the lucrative slave trade. During this busy and productive time in the island's history, construction of numerous monuments of great opulence took place, many of which have since become popular tourist attractions.
- Duration: 6 hour(s)
- Location: 20 minutes from the city of Praia
Highlights include:
- The first point of interest is The Royal Fortress of Saint Phillip. Providing a beautiful view of the town and of the riverside, the fortress was built in 1587 after two violent attacks (in 1578 and 1585), carried out by Francis Drake, an English corsair.
- The ruins of the only Cathedral that existed in Cape Verde - towards the centre of the town - built in 1556 when Father Francisco da Cruz was head of the Episcopate.
- Pillory or Whipping post - also in the centre of the Town - constructed in white marble in 1512, it remains intact as a reminder of the harsh times where the punishment of slaves were carried out.
- The next point to visit is Banana Street, the first street urbanised by the Europeans in Africa.
- The Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, built in 1495, is one of the oldest constructions in Cape Verde. Its beautiful state, conserved over the years, is exceptional; especially considering it is more than 500 years old.
- The Church and Convent of San Francisco, which sheltered the Franciscan religious people who came to replace the Jesuits. It is now used as a pleasant space for accomplished meetings, conferences, art exhibitions and numerous other events.
