- The first point of interest is The Royal Fortress of Saint Phillip. Providing a beautiful view of the town and of the riverside, the fortress was built in 1587 after two violent attacks (in 1578 and 1585), carried out by Francis Drake, an English corsair.
- The ruins of the only Cathedral that existed in Cape Verde - towards the centre of the town - built in 1556 when Father Francisco da Cruz was head of the Episcopate.
- Pillory or Whipping post - also in the centre of the Town - constructed in white marble in 1512, it remains intact as a reminder of the harsh times where the punishment of slaves were carried out.
